How to Read Mooney Viscosity?

Updated: 2026-10-08 · RIOMI Editorial · Quality & Testing
Quick AnswerMooney viscosity is a test indicator for unvulcanized rubber; it must be read together with the test method, temperature, preheating time, and rotor running time. A single figure cannot prove product performance.

Readings

ISO 289-1 specifies the method for determining the Mooney viscosity of unvulcanized rubber using a shearing-disc viscometer. The notation ML(1+4) 100°C commonly used by customers contains information on the rotor, time, and temperature; comparisons must be made under identical conditions.

Business Interpretation

Mooney variation within the same batch may affect mastication and mixing, but energy consumption, dump temperature, cure curve, and final products should also be examined. Mooney viscosity of raw rubber and that of compound rubber must not be confused.
