From Field Latex to Commercial Rubber: What Are the Main Processing Routes for Natural Rubber?

Updated: 2026-10-08 · RIOMI Editorial · Products & Grades
Quick AnswerField latex and cup lump are raw materials; commercial rubber mainly follows five routes: latex concentrate, Ribbed Smoked Sheets (RSS), Technically Specified Rubber (TSR), light-colored technically specified rubber (3L), and Constant Viscosity rubber (CV), each with distinct processes and end uses.

Raw Material Supply

Rubber estates supply field latex or cup lump. Rubber trees typically require five to seven years from planting to tapping; once mature, they can be tapped for about twenty-five to thirty years. Weather, diseases, tree age, and tapping labor all affect raw material supply.

Five Commercial Processing Routes

Latex concentrate: Field latex is filtered, preserved, and centrifugally concentrated to a dry rubber content of typically about 60%, remaining in liquid form for dipping and foaming applications such as gloves, balloons, catheters, and foam products.

Ribbed Smoked Sheets (RSS): Latex is coagulated, sheeted with a ribbed pattern, smoke-dried, and visually graded into amber-colored sheets where grade emphasizes appearance and cleanliness; used in tires, belting, and general industrial goods.

Technically Specified Rubber (TSR): Cup lump or latex coagulum is washed, crushed, blended, dried, baled, and tested, then graded according to laboratory specifications for bulk industries; used in tires, conveyor belts, track pads, and black industrial products.

Light-colored technically specified rubber (3L): Produced mainly from cleaner field latex with controlled coagulation, washing, drying, and color; it is light in shade and low in dirt content, used for footwear, light-colored articles, compounding, and industrial rubber.

Constant Viscosity rubber (CV): Processed from high-grade raw rubber to inhibit storage hardening and control Mooney viscosity, offering a more consistent batch-to-batch processing window; used in automotive NVH, rail transit, isolation mounts, and high-dynamic applications.

Downstream Processing

Primary processing plants deliver raw rubber, not end-use articles. Downstream manufacturers still carry out mastication, weighing, internal or open mill mixing, extrusion or calendering, preforming, molding, and vulcanization; natural rubber is compounded with carbon black, vulcanizing agents, antioxidants, and other chemicals to produce a rubber compound that meets service conditions.
