Why Do Two Mooney Viscometers Give Different Results for the Same Batch? (Test Standards and Inter-instrument Variation)
Three Standard Systems
GB/T 1232.1 is a modified adoption of ISO 289-1; GB/T 1233 covers Mooney scorch; ASTM D1646 belongs to the U.S. standard system. A key difference: ASTM permits mill-pass pre-treatment of test specimens, while ISO does not—so the same sample tested under the two standards cannot be directly compared.
The common notation ML(1+4)100°C indicates a large rotor, 1-minute preheating, 4-minute test duration, and 100°C. Reporting a Mooney value without stating the test conditions is meaningless.
Key Operating Points
Specimens should be approximately 50 mm in diameter and 6 mm thick, free of bubbles; condition for at least 16 hours at 23°C/50%RH before testing; closing force 11.5±0.5 kN; preheat for 1 minute then test for 4 minutes; replicate difference should be ≤2 MU, and out-of-spec results must be retested.
Pre-treatments such as 'six-pass milling and sheeting' alter the molecular state; whether performed or not, or the number of passes used, will introduce systematic bias—always verify specimen preparation methods before comparing data.
How to Assess Inter-instrument Variation
There is no conversion factor between Mooney viscometers of different brands. An inter-instrument difference of ±1–3 MU for the same sample is normal; exceeding 5 MU requires investigation: a 1°C temperature deviation affects results by roughly 0.5–1 MU, and the greatest risk is mixing large and small rotors.
When suppliers and buyers compare Mooney data, they should first agree on the standard, rotor, temperature, and specimen preparation method before discussing numerical differences.
